The penultimate chapter of the manga, Chainsaw Man, is full of twists and wild action that no reader might have expected. It appears that Denji had many plans when he went to the field of graves alone for his Makima rematch. The end of the chapter is probably one of the sickest ones in a long time. Denji eats Makima’s remains, which is one of the most gruesome acts of manga.

It turns out that Makima was fighting Pochita, believing him to be Denji. Since Denji was able to function without his heart for a while, it allowed him to catch Makima off guard. Makima has dissed her idol without realizing it at the start of the fight, but by the time she realizes what has happened, it’s too late. However, the readers at the beginning of the chapter might be mistaken to believe that Denji talked about becoming one with Makima only poetically. But soon, it is revealed that he meant it literally.

When he talks about Makima’s taste, it was not a comment made in a poetic sense, but Denji was literally eating her remains. Denji apologizes to Makima for what he was about to do to her. Denji gets the time to prepare for cutting Makima up when he skips to the scene with Kishibe immediately after their fight. When he sees Kishibe come to the gravesite, he says that Master’s here to pick us up, and he means it. Makima is coming with him but in pieces.

It seems that Denji is just adding insult to injury. While they were fighting, Makima had said that if she loses, she would want to be given the honor of being eaten by her idol, the Chainsaw Man. She idolized him, so after defeating her, Denji decided to rub salt on her wounds (literally and figuratively) by eating her but not as the Chainsaw Man. So, she would eventually become a part of Denji, not Chainsaw Man, and even her last wish was denied to her.

Now, there is a lack of clarity, and no one knows what happens now. Since Denji did not eat Makima as the Chainsaw Man, there is still a possibility that she won’t be completely erased from existence and might make a return. Even though she was cut into pieces, she can always come back from such a state. But, Denji is quite confident that he has taken care of her regeneration and she won’t be back. However, it is unclear if the concept of control is going to end with her or not. It is hard to imagine what a world without control would seem like. It would be interesting to see what happens now and how much the world of Chainsaw Man changes after Makima’s death.
